DOCUMENT PREPARATION GUIDE
Certified Translations
for Croatian Citizenship
Many documents for Croatian citizenship applications must be translated into Croatian by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač). This guide explains what you need to know so you can prepare your documents the right way and avoid delays.

What Needs to Be Translated?
Vital Records
Birth, marriage, death and divorce certificates for you and your ancestors.
Legal & Court Documents
Naturalization records, court orders, adoption decrees and other legal documents.
Background Checks
FBI Background checks and police certificates when required
Education & Certificates
Diplomas, school records and any other supporting documents.
Other Documents
Any additional documents requested by the consulate in your case
Who Can Translate Your Doucuments?
What About Apostilles?
When Should Documents Be Translated?
Translations must be completed by a court-certified translator (sudski tumač) who is authorized by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Croatia.
Regular translations are not accepted by Croatian authorities or consulates.
If a document requires an apostille, both the document and the apostille must be translated into Croatian.
The apostille forms part of the authenticated document package and should be included in the certified translation.
Translations should generally be arranged after all required documents have been obtained, certified, and apostilled.
Completing these steps first ensures that the court-certified translator receives the final versions of your documents, including all certifications and apostilles, so the complete document package can be translated into Croatian.
